2-day training with Dr Dan Hughes: Developing therapeutic stories with children and teenagers that reduce their shame and fear

2-day training with Dr Dan Hughes: Developing therapeutic stories with children and teenagers that reduce their shame and fear

Overview

For the past 25 years, Dan has specialised in working with traumatised children who are locked in anger, behaviours that challenge, inability to learn, mental health difficulties and severe relationship problems.

On the training, Dan will demonstrate how to enable children and teenagers to feel safe enough to tell the story of their traumatic past. He will explore how to help them to then develop a coherent narrative for what happened to them and grieve what needs to be grieved, so they are no longer haunted by fear and shame. This is because so much anger and controlling behaviour comes from unaddressed trauma-based shame with a wonky narrative of, “The bad things that happened in my life were all my fault.

Dan will also explore how corrective emotional experience with a therapeutic practitioner can enable the child/teenager to internalise new messages about themselves and others, based on all the compassion, understanding, psychoeducation and emotional warmth in the therapeutic relationship.

Other benefits from attending:

  • Gain a wealth of tools and techniques to support you to respond therapeutically when a child/teenager tells you a very important story about their life.
  • Learn new ways to help children/ teenagers to think about their lives.
  • Watch Dan demonstrate how to talk with children/teenagers using an affective-reflective dialogue. This involves feeling as well as thinking where the therapist explores in a profoundly moving way all aspects of the child’s life; safe and traumatic; present and past.
  • Learn about Dan’s model of Dyad Developmental Psychotherapy in which the child gains relationship experience which helps them to heal and family members develop healthy patterns of relating, becoming open to each other’s inner lives.
  • Watch Dan demonstrate therapeutic conversations based on his model of PACE, through moving case material of and live role play.

Please note: To attend this training, you will need to have completed, or be in the process of completing, some counselling or therapy training or Diploma Trauma Informed Schools TISUK.
