About the conference
Carlotta Raby has worked all over the world with children and teenagers suffering from PTSD and has founded an international charity that continues her amazing work. She has helped hundreds of children who have been traumatised through witnessing life-threatening events such as natural disasters, terrorism, military combat etc. Others have been victims of physical or sexual assault. As trauma specialist Bessel Van der Kolk says 'PTSD makes you fight the last battle again and again'. This means that without help, children suffering from PTSD re-live their experiences through nightmares, flashbacks, sleeping problems, avoidance, phobia, panic attacks and live with unbearable levels of hyperarousal and fear long after the actual horrifying event is over. It’s like having a faulty burglar alarm in your head that keeps going off all the time. These children often try so hard to learn at school, and to enjoy the people in their life but trauma can blight all areas of their life.
Through moving case material Carlotta will explore how to reach out to these children and in particular how to heal minds and brains through the use of art and imagery. Her work is supported by the latest science and psychology of how PTSD impacts on brain, mind and body and what we need to be able to heal.
