Meeting the emotional needs of young people in schools

In this webinar Dr Sunderland will address causes of depression and low self-esteem in young people. This will include the key cause of unmet emotional needs as described by Maslow in his hierarchy of needs: psychological safety, belonging, connectedness, self-esteem and finding purpose and meaning. Each of these emotional needs will be discussed through the lens of the latest neuroscience and psychological research as relevant to the mental health of young people.

Part 1

Presenter: Dr Margot Sunderland

 About the webinar

In this webinar Dr Sunderland will address causes of depression and low self-esteem in young people. This will include the key cause of unmet emotional needs as described by Maslow in his hierarchy of needs:  psychological safety, belonging, connectedness, self-esteem and  finding purpose and meaning. Each of these emotional needs will be discussed through the lens of the latest neuroscience and psychological research as relevant to the mental health of young people.

Also for schools and settings that say they care about the mental health of young people, Dr Sunderland will also focus on the responsibility   to identify and then address unmet emotional needs in troubled young people. She will confront views of ‘it’s not the school’s job to do this” by showing highly effective interventions that are both cost effective and non-time consuming as vital prevention against depression and suicidal ideation in young people. Most importantly, the webinar also explores the underlying causes of why so many young people want to die and why many tragically take their own lives. Dr Sunderland discusses how settings can implement a Suicide Prevention Policy to protect young people, so no young person is left suffering agonising states of emotional distress

In addition, Dr Sunderland addresses how to support young people who suffer from anxiety; again, by addressing underlying causes rather than solely on behavioural or cognitive interventions that often don’t work overtime.

The vital role of psycho-education for young people as protective factor against depression and anxiety will be explored

Benefits from attending:

  • Understand key causes of depression anxiety and low self-esteem in young people what schools and other settings can do about it
  • Learn how lethal it is for vulnerable young people to attend a school that does not focus rigorously on ensuring the meeting of all their Maslowian needs
  • Find out how a school’s suicide prevention policy can be far more effective and evidence based than just focusing on ‘spot the signs”
  • Take away specific techniques and interventions that are easily implemented
  • Learn from moving film footage and case material

Part 2

About this webinar

Dr Sunderland will explore what schools can do to help vulnerable young people who are unmotivated and alienated from school and  schoolwork to be able to re-engage with life  and learning and enjoy fulfilling non-power-based relationships, often for the first time. She will discuss ways schools can prevent the ‘school to prison pipeline’ by addressing young people’s unmet emotional needs, enabling them to move from blocked trust to trust, often enjoying secure attachment for the first time.

Additionally, Dr Sunderland will address how to support young people who have never really experienced social joy, or passion for creative pursuits and those who suffer from lethargy, boredom and hopelessness. She will discuss the neuroscience of the brain’s SEEKING system ( Panksepp and Biven 2012) and how easily it can be blocked by emotional pain, fear and/or unmoored grief.  When this has happened, she offers interventions that work.

Finally she addressed how to relate to young people locked in anger in order for them to feel connected with rather than vilified and rejected. She explores the key reasons why for some young people persistent anger is a life line in the avoidance of so much hurt and pain but how emotionally available adults can change all that

Benefits from attending

  • Understand why some young people are ‘locked in anger’
  • Learn about neurochemical systems triggering passion for learning, initiative and adventure, which are adversely impacted by adverse childhood experiences
  • Understand how schools can support young people to re-engage with life and learning
  • Learn about actual models of remarkable change, such as ‘The Teens and Toddlers Programme’.
  • Learn how the brain’s PLAY system for social joy and the SEEKING system (passion for learning and adventure) can become blocked and how to reactivate them
